My system

My system includes:

Dedicated home theatre/music room

My room is medium in size and has a moderate level of sound isolation treatment, including double layer plasterboard and acoustic insulation. All gaps have been sealed, and an external door is well sealed around the jam. I don't use room treatment, but instead take an approach inspired by Dr Earl Geddes. I keep the room relatively live but provide bass damping in the envelope.

DIY open baffle speakers

These have an ideal relationship with the room which eliminates the need for acoustic room treatment. The sound stage is immersive, wide and deep. The sweet spot is large eliminating the need for a centre speaker.

DIY servo subs

Dual sealed 12" Rythmik subs cover 80 Hz and below. These do everything that high end woofers can and then some. They are very tight and articulate. A key advantage compared to traditional bass arrangements is that they can be placed for an optimal room interaction.

Behringer Ultracurve digital EQ

A studio mastering processor isn't normally found in a home audio system. However this digital EQ unit gives me a much greater level of control over the final result. I use it to tame room modes in the bass, as well as voice the system. It includes other enhancements like an intelligent loudness control which means the bass doesn't get weak at lower levels. Many consider the inclusion of a unit like this to be a sin, but everyone who has heard it call it a clear improvement.
